WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
Everyone is searching for something real. Not a curated version of relationship, not a conditional arrangement, but genuine friendship that goes deeper than surface level. This week we explored the friendship Jesus offers, one that loved us before we changed, tells us the truth, proved itself at the cross, and only asks one thing in return: that we respond.
You Are Not Alone
We live in a world overflowing with connection and starving for something real. Social media promises friendship but often produces isolation. And in the middle of all that noise, God offers something completely different. Jesus Christ offers a relationship that transcends human limitations and fills the deepest longing of the human heart in a way nothing else can reach.
He sees every struggle you face. He knows every tear you have cried in the dark. He understands the weight you carry into each new day. And He does not require you to clean yourself up before coming to Him. He specializes in loving broken people exactly where they are, before the change, before the victory, before the transformation.
“In a world where people are lonely, in a world where people feel disconnected, a world where people feel anxious, a world where people are hurting, everybody is looking for something real.”
Loved Before You Changed
One of the most remarkable aspects of Jesus' friendship is that His love is not dependent on your performance. He loved you before you knew Him, before you cleaned up your life, and before you understood what faith even meant. He chose to love you at your worst, not your best, while you were still broken, still lost, still carrying everything you were not proud of.
When you mess up, He does not unfriend you. When others walk away because you were too much or not enough, He walks closer. His friendship is a gift, not a reward for good performance, and it was never something you qualified for. It was always something He chose to give. Rest in that.
“Jesus loved us before you and I changed. Before you and I allowed God to clean up our life. Before we knew even what a Bible was, before we understood what church means, Jesus loved us. That is real friendship.”
A Friend Who Tells the Truth
Real friendship is not just about comfort. It is about truth. Our culture has increasingly celebrated comfort over truth, validating every choice and calling anything else judgment. But Jesus loves you too much to leave you trapped in deception or patterns that are pulling you away from the life He died to give you. His correction comes from a heart that desires your absolute best.
Think about the people in your life who have loved you enough to speak difficult truths. They are rare and precious. Jesus is that friend. He will always be honest with you because He sees your full potential and refuses to let you settle for less than what God has prepared.
“A true friend doesn't tell you what you want to hear. A true friend does tell us what we need to hear. I think we live in a culture, and we live in a day that we celebrate comfort over truth. But Jesus loves us enough to tell us the truth.”
Love Proven at the Cross
The ultimate proof of Jesus' friendship is not found in words. It is found at the cross. Every nail driven into His hands was a declaration of love. Every drop of blood shed was Him saying, you matter to me. This was not something forced upon Him. He willingly chose the cross because He desired relationship with you more than He desired to avoid the suffering.
When you doubt whether you matter, look to the cross. When you question if anyone truly cares, remember Calvary. The cross is God's love letter to humanity, written in blood and sealed with resurrection power. This is friendship at its purest: selfless, sacrificial, and transformative.
“Every nail that was nailed was saying, I love you. Every drop of blood was saying, you matter to me.”
Friendship Requires Response
While Jesus offers His friendship freely, true friendship is always reciprocal. He does not want to be your emergency contact or a Sunday acquaintance. He wants to be woven into every part of your life. You can enter into this friendship through genuine repentance, baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. This is the doorway into the relationship He has been extending.
The question has never been whether He is available. He always has been. The question is whether you will respond. Friendship is a back and forth. When it is only one sided, that is not friendship. That is reaching. He has been reaching long enough. Reach back.
“Friendship is reciprocal. It is a back and forth. You can't have friendship without a response. When it's only one sided. That's not friendship, that's reaching.”
The friend you have been looking for has been looking for you. He loved you first. He told you the truth. He proved it at Calvary. And He is still waiting for your response today.
